My take on a Woodsman knife

I had an odd shape off cut of 5mm 01 tool steel and thought of making a knife with it, as you do of course. What else!

This is what I came up with. It's still a work in progress, the blade is not fixed or hardened yet. It's actually really comfortable knife to hold, in various ways and it's comfortable in all of them. The blade is only 4" long, 2" wide, scandi grind with the same angle as my knives.

My idea is that is will be a sort of all purpose woodsman/mountaiman knife.

  1. Personally I prefere a big knife but not a heavy one. I find the butcher style knife best suited to my needs. But my lifestyle here is much different to yours in the UK. We have dangerous animals here and a long bladed knife and a tomahawk are a good back-up.
I only carry a flintlock fusil, so I only get one shot before having to reload. But it does teach you to make that one shot count.
Generally I only hunt when I need meat.

  2. My style of knives has changed in the past few month. I much prefer to make "old style" knives and I am planning to make some which are more authentic in design. I have made knives in the Uk favoured Ray Mears Woodlore, but I found it no more useful than a Mora Frost. No dangerous animals here, apart perhaps from the odd two legged variety!
