Long handled knives from around the world

This is the Pfeil Shoulder knife Markus mentioned in his comment in the precedeeng post. I had never heard of this one until now. Based on knives used in medieval times for veneering, and providing more control by resting the handle on the shoulder, therefore the user has more control as to where the blade goes.

The SAK of the Dayaks

Here is a picture of some Sarawak parangs and other smaller knives that have long handles. I know there are other pictures of those long handled knives but can't find them at the moment..

So here are some beauties to drool over!

Long handled craft knife

Another tool I made recently is this knife based on the medieval quill  knife. the long handle, together with the short blade gives excellent control for general craft work, such as leather work and wood carving. It has a full tang blade, Yew scales and a poured pewter bolster. It is a strong knife, despite its slim looking handle.

Pruning knives

I was asked recently by a keen gardener for a pruning knife. I made both a fixed blade and folding pruning knives. Here are a few  photos.

Fixed blade with Olivewood handle

Both knives have file work on the spine

Hand carved wood signs

I have done a bit more wood carving lately. For a few years, I have made carved signs, and the only advertisement I have used was a couple of wood carved plaques by the side of the road. They have over the years become very tatty, and  I finally took them down a few months ago, and had a break from making signs. I finally got down to making a new one to replace them.  Here are a couple of pictures, taken prior to varnishing. I have used Oak for the board and Mahogany for the Hare carving.

Most of the signs I have made over the years have been house signs. I never made a forturne with them though. I am now going to try harder to attract "business signs" and the above sign is only going to be part of the advertising! I hope it's going to work...
