I have finished the mountainman knife and it's sheath sooner than I expected. The sheath is a bit of an experiment in that I have made it to include the firesteel and the knife in a one piece sheath. The knife fits in the sheath at an angle to try and keep the overall size reasonably small. I think it works quite well. I am not so keen on the twisted leather loop I used, although this is more of an aesthetic thing: the loop is plenty strong enough, works well and many scandinavian sheaths used twisted leather loops like this one.
I have also made a brass plate and loop which is riveted and glued to the antler handle. This will accomodate a leather wrist strap.
Joel, what awesome craftsmanship! We were just sitting at the computer admiring some of your work when the mailman came to the door with the sheath you made for Rico's foraging sickle- beautiful, and what a nice little knife too- i'm sure Rico has plenty more to say about it but i just had to get a word in too :)

I like the pommel. Hey, I like it ALL!
ReplyDeleteLovely workmanship.
ReplyDeleteThank you all. Beth, you'll have to let me know when you have been able to use the sickle how it performs and a couple of photos in use would be good too!
ReplyDeleteThat´s a great knife... it inspires me again, in fact.;-) I love those mountainman designs a lot, and guess I´ll make one too, soon. I admire the brass loop, great idea to boot! As for the sheath, it leaves me speechless.
ReplyDeleteWho is Bruno Duffort? And who needs him anyway?;-)
absolutely!
