Turkey Jerky!!

I made my first bunch of jerky yesterday. This particular recipe called for turkey meat instead of beef. I found it in a book and just had to try it.

Use some turkey breast, cut it in thin strips across the grain, marinate the meat for 2 to 4 hours in 1/2 cup soy sauce, 1/2 cup of Worcester sauce and 1/4 cup of red wine vinegar.

After that, just lay the strips across an oven rack overnight at 150 degrees farenheit, about 60 centigrade. Mine was in the oven for about 9 hours.

The only problem is that it got eaten faster than it got made!

  1. I've always fancied trying that. You ate it before you got any pics, must've been good.

  2. Joel, sorry to double comment, but have you heard of a wooden drum called a "cajon", you seem like someone who'd know taht kind of thing

  3. I am afraid it was eaten before the camera could come out!

It was actually very easy to do, the turkey hardly has any fat which help the jerky keep longer...(not that it was any use on this occasion!)

It was left in the oven probably a bit longer than necessary, but enjoyable nevertheless.

  4. Until now, no, I had not heard of the Cajon. I had a quick look on Google and now know it's a wooden drum with a "snare" made of guitar strings to increase the resonance. At first glance they look easy to make, it's a simple box after all, but I should think the quality, thickness and type of woods would all make a difference to the sounds they produce.

Are you thinking of making one? I did a quick search and found PDF plans for making one. I can see they might well be addictive things to make!

  5. Hi Joel

I am thinking of making one, but the way I approach it is just to make something up with what I've got to hand to see if it works, and then if it wasn't too annoying to make and worked okay I make a proper one, except that I usually never get around to that.

It's just that when I saw them I immediately thought about your instrument making. These would be well within your scope and would have wide appeal, beyond the musicians fraternity (students, festival types)and affordability. I reckon they'd sell pretty good. Anyway, I'm getting way carried away. I'm off to rip some ply out of a cupboard, Keep that on the DL!
